When Two Roads Converge: A Celebrant’s Process

I’ve often thought it’s unfortunate that people only think about death when they think of a mortuary or cemetery.  Why not think about life…a place where life is celebrated in all its beauty? I've spent the last 9 years as a Funeral Celebrant and can attest to the power of a place that honors life, my thought is, let's not just go to a mortuary in the wake of death, let's also go in and enjoy life. “Who Wants to go on a Coroner Tour?!”

By | 2013-06-26T05:00:26-08:00 June 26th, 2013|Community, News|21 Comments

I don’t know how you would respond to this question, but I jumped at the opportunity. Becky, our Director of Community Development, set up this tour and although she was met with some resistance, she filled up the spots with community professionals and had just enough space for me to tag along with my dad, Jeff Turner, one of the O’Connor owners. Now I know most kids don’t grow up hearing about the Coroner’s office, but I did. My dad was always so impressed with the level of professionalism, service & efficiency he received from the Orange County office - [...]

Halloween Past & Present: From the 70’s to Today

By | 2012-10-29T05:00:34-08:00 October 29th, 2012|Community, General|26 Comments

Halloween Past & Present- by Carrie Bayer It's the time of year where the ghosts & goblins come out. Pumpkins, black cats, styrofoam tomb stones & cottony spider webs adorn the neighborhood in anticipation of trick-or-treating. I love this time of year! Via Country Living When I was a kid, my dad would put our dog on a leash & take us kids around the neighborhood to get our fill of candy. There were tons of other families out & about- it was a great night for neighbors to admire the kids' costumes, visit & get to know [...]

Help! How Do YOU Answer the Call?

By | 2012-09-05T05:00:50-08:00 September 5th, 2012|Community, Inspiration|17 Comments

Help!  How Do YOU Answer the Call? Help.  We all need it at times for a million different reasons.  It can be as simple as someone opening the door for you when you have an armload of groceries or as complex as a stranger pulling you from a burning building.  In either scenario, you are truly grateful for that gesture.  But does that make you think of how YOU can help someone else?  I sure hope so!  Whether you help a stranger or a loved one, the fact that you thought about them and chose to assist is more meaningful [...]

Journey Mercies . . . Leaving Home

By | 2012-06-29T06:41:32-08:00 June 29th, 2012|General, Seasons of Life|35 Comments

Journey Mercies . . . Leaving Home The thought of leaving home wasn’t something I wanted to think about, nor was it something I figured I would ever have to do.  I was 60 years old and had lived in the same house for 28 years.  It was my home and I didn’t want to leave it or my family. What was I doing?  I was on another journey . . . moving closer to work. Do you remember the first time you left home - really left home?  Were you young, and just moving into your first apartment, excited [...]

Sweet Sanctuary – Where is Yours?

By | 2012-06-15T04:00:16-08:00 June 15th, 2012|General, Self-Help|27 Comments

Sweet Sanctuary - Where is Yours? The definition of sanctuary in the words of my dear friend Marianne Piotrowski is “A place of refuge, a place to feel safe & comfortable.  A place where one can de-stress from the outside world & commune with God.”  It means something different to each of us but serves us all in the same way.  Sanctuary can be your home, work, family, friends, outdoors, church - anything, really.  But what does it mean to you? Most times, a person's sanctuary changes depending on what stage they're in at that moment of their life.  When [...]

Serving Others with our Time, Talents, and Treasures

Talents, Time, and Treasures The Three Wise Men of Service Long ago in 2004, our firm’s CEO, Neil O’Connor, approached me about becoming a part of a service organization called “Rotary International.”  I, like many, have been greeted by the “Rotary Wheel” that is displayed upon entering countless cities across the USA; but I didn’t have a clue about what Rotary did.  With a heavy sigh, I agreed to join the Rotary Club of San Juan Capistrano, knowing that I could always quit and pass that baton back to Neil. Happy New Year! We are proud to announce our Heart and Soul Award Winner for December 2011, Megan Wood of San Clemente. A blackjack tournament is scheduled for Sunday and yoga practice begins Tuesday morning prior to a scenic trip to the beach. While this sounds like the event calendar for a five-star resort, these are just a few of the activities San Clemente’s Megan Wood is planning for a thriving community of active senior citizens. […]
