Charles Arthur Endter
June 25, 1923 – April 9, 2019

Charles Arthur Endter was born in Springfield, Ohio, the second son of Arthur and Marguerite (Altvater) Endter. He attended primary and secondary schools in Springfield before entering Wittenberg University in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer on the USS Chicago.

Charles earned an undergraduate degree from Wittenberg University and completed a Master of Arts degree in speech and theater at Ohio State University. He earned his Master of Divinity degree at Hamma Theological Seminary. While in seminary, Charles met Helen Snyder whom he married in 1952.

As an ordained Lutheran minister, Charles started mission congregations in Santa Cruz and Garden Grove, California. He nurtured the growth and development of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Garden Grove for 34 years. In retirement he served as interim pastor at five Lutheran congregations in Orange County: Redeemer, Placentia; Newport Harbor, Newport Beach; Mount of Olives, Mission Viejo; Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Huntington Beach; and St. Olaf, Garden Grove.

His lifelong interests included a passion for speech and drama, a fondness for travel and gardening, and a love of celebrating special occasions with family and friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don, and sister-in-law, Margaret. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen, and four children: Jennifer (Jeff) Morgan of Ryde, United Kingdom; Joanna (Glen) Wada of Logan, Utah; Jonathan (Cheryl) Endter of Colleyville, Texas; and Janice (Lewis) Latimer of Palos Verdes Estates, California. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, along with nephews and nieces.

  3. Dear Aunt Helen, Joanna, Jennifer, Jonathan, Jennifer and families,

Our thoughts & prayers are with all of you. Uncle Charles was a wonderful person and we will always remember his visits to Pennsylvania, as well as, visiting with him in California. I still remember at Universal Studios tour when he volunteered to be the actor. Hearing him preach in Garden Grove will always be remembered.

    With Deepest Sympathy,
Betty Ann & Wayne Zackal from Pennsylvania

I will be forever grateful to my “religious” parents, Joe and Betty Tomchick for introducing me to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where I met Pastor Endter in the late 60s. He laid the foundation for my spiritual growth as a child and on through high school and beyond. I have beautiful memories of his powerful, yet gentle voice as he delivered poignant sermons. I went through the confirmation classes under his guidance and he baptized me when I was in high school. Pastor Endter will always carry a special place in my heart. What a lovely soul has ascended to heaven. My condolences to the entire Endter family. My prayers are with you.
