Happy New Year! We are proud to announce our Heart and Soul Award Winner for December 2011, Megan Wood of San Clemente. A blackjack tournament is scheduled for Sunday and yoga practice begins Tuesday morning prior to a scenic trip to the beach. While this sounds like the event calendar for a five-star resort, these are just a few of the activities San Clemente’s Megan Wood is planning for a thriving community of active senior citizens. […]

Steve Concialdi, a former winner of the Heart & Soul Award, was mentioned in a recent article in the Capistrano Dispatch. He is the founder of Friends Against Drunk Driving, and a paramedic Captain with the Orange County Fire Authority.  Steve shared his feelings with the writers, “I was hired at the fire department at a young age, and I saw a lot of my friends going to parties, drinking and driving. O’Connor Mortuary happily introduces the winner of the Heart & Soul Award for this month, Ward Payne. But even upon returning to civilian life, he still maintained his own personal legacy of service – this time by donating relentlessly to Kiwanis Club and American Legion where he has volunteered for nearly four decades. We give him this award to honor his lifetime of steadfast commitment to community involvement. “I’m honored [...]

The Heart & Soul Award for February was awarded to Laguna Niguel resident Kaitlyn Waterbury. A few years ago she adopted Ghandi’s simple philosophy of “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” At just 18 years old, the Dana Hills High School student has already accomplished remarkable things for her school, her community and even those living in third-world countries, making her the perfect recipient of the O’Connor Mortuary Heart & Soul Award. “I am so pleased to honor Kaitlyn this month. Philanthropy isn’t something she does; it is a part of who she is,” said Neil [...]

Announcing the Winner of the Heart & Soul Award for December, 2010 Linda Falk, of San Juan Capistrano, is our most recent award-winner. At first, Falk did not see how she fit in. But the mortuary purposely sought out an "extraordinary ordinary" person to honor this month, she was told, and then it started to sink in. "I'm just a mom, a grandmom and a teacher," Falk said. "I'm just doing what people are doing today in the sandwich generation." What Falk is doing is taking care of her 9-month-old grandson, Kellen, by day and her aging parents by night. [...]
